USS Huron Shipwreck
A Civil War-era iron gunboat that ran aground 250 yards off the Nags Head beach in 1877, killing 98 of 134 crew members. Designated as North Carolina's first Historic Shipwreck Preserve, the Huron lies just offshore with buoys marking the site in summer. Accessible to experienced snorkelers and divers — check conditions with a lifeguard first and never swim alone. A sobering and fascinating piece of OBX maritime history hiding in plain sight.
