Portsmouth Island
A ghost village on Portsmouth Island established in 1753 and abandoned by its last residents in the early 1970s — now preserved by the National Park Service and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Restored buildings including a church, schoolhouse, post office, and Coast Guard station stand largely as they were left. The beach offers serious solitude, excellent surf fishing, and outstanding shelling. Accessible only by boat from Ocracoke. One of the most hauntingly beautiful and historically significant places on the entire OBX.
