Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

A National Wildlife Refuge on the northern end of Hatteras Island established in 1938, covering beach, dunes, brackish ponds, and marshes. Over 370 bird species have been recorded here — migratory waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, and more. Hike the North Pond Wildlife Trail, kayak the sound side, fish the surf, join a guided bird walk, or just stop at the Visitor Center to see what's been spotted recently. Free to visit and genuinely spectacular during migration season.
