Ocracoke Lighthouse
The oldest operating lighthouse in North Carolina and one of the oldest in the entire United States, the Ocracoke Lighthouse has been guiding ships through the treacherous inlet since 1824. Standing 75 feet tall with five-foot thick solid brick walls, the lighthouse is not open for climbing but the base is accessible during limited summer hours. Set in a beautifully preserved historic complex in Ocracoke Village — a genuinely moving piece of American maritime history worth seeking out.
