Fort Raleigh National Historic Site

The site of England's first attempted settlement in America, established on Roanoke Island in 1585 and forever linked to the mystery of the Lost Colony — 117 colonists who vanished without explanation between 1587 and 1590. Fort Raleigh National Historic Site preserves this layered history including the Algonquian people, the Freedmen's Colony established during the Civil War, and the Elizabethan Gardens. The Lost Colony outdoor drama has performed here every summer since 1937. Free to visit, open year-round.
