Bottlenose dolphins are year-round OBX residents and surprisingly easy to spot — surf line, sound side, from a pier, from a boat. The Outer Banks Center for Dolphin Research has identified over 800 individual dolphins in the Roanoke Sound since 2008. Plenty of local tour operators run dedicated dolphin watch trips if you want a guided experience, including the Nags Head Dolphin Watch. Either way, keep your eyes on the water.
