Buxton Woods Trail
A 1.75-mile self-guided loop trail through Buxton Woods — one of Hatteras Island's most remarkable maritime forests. Towering pines, century-old live oaks, saltwater and freshwater ponds, and wildlife that has no business existing on a barrier island: river otters, deer, bald eagles, red foxes, owls, and box turtles. Free, relatively level, and genuinely stunning. Bring bug spray — no exceptions, no season is safe.
