British Cemetery
On May 11, 1942, a German submarine torpedoed and sank the British vessel HMS Bedfordshire off Ocracoke. Four bodies washed ashore and were buried by Ocracoke locals with full military honors. The small cemetery is maintained by the US Coast Guard and is technically British soil on Ocracoke Island. A genuinely moving stop. Ferry required.
