Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge
A massive 164,000-acre wildlife refuge on the mainland portion of Dare County, established in 1984 to protect the Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula ecosystem. Home to black bears, red wolves, alligators, and extraordinary bird life. Night drives through the refuge during certain seasons offer a genuinely wild experience.
